| Almost
a century after English Quaker William Penn founded Philadelphia
in 1682, the city became the birthplace of the nation and the
home of its first government. Today, for visitors and natives
alike, Philadelphia is synonymous with Independence Hall, the
Liberty Bell, cheesesteaks and hoagies, ethnic neighborhoods,
theaters, buoyant classical music, and city streets teeming with
life. With about 1.5 million people, Penn's "City of
Brotherly Love" is the fifth-largest city in the country,
yet it maintains the feel of a friendly small town.
